History

ImageThe first settlers traveled from Vincennes, In. up the Wabash in 1814 and settled along the river at York and Darwin There was a fertile area between the hills and the river bottom north and west of York called Union Prairie. Over the years the name West Union evolved.
Thomas Handy, son of John Handy, who settled where West Union stands, is said to be the first white child born in Clark County. Fort Handy was located near the present West Union Park. John, Stephen, and Denton Handy are all buried in the Handy cemetery located on the Shawler property east a short distance from the edge of town.

There is much more history of our area in the local West Union Library.
